Apple Blog iMac

Apple announced the upcoming iMac Pro back at WWDC in June earlier this year. Apple calls it the ‘most powerful Mac ever’ and features a space gray casing and accessories.
The iMac Pro features the same design as the standard iMac, but with an all-flash and a new thermal design that supports an Intel Xeon processor with up to 18 cores and a top-of-the-line Radeon Pro Vega graphics.
The 27-inch iMac Pro is equipped with a high-quality 5K display that supports 1 billion colors and it comes in a unique space gray enclosure with matching space gray accessories.
iMac Pro features four Thunderbolt 3 ports powerful enough to drive multiple 5K displays at once, and it supports up to 4TB of solid state storage and 128GB of ECC RAM.

Design

The iMac Pro looks like a standard iMac, with an ultra-thin slim-bodied design , but it is set apart with a unique space gray enclosure and a new thermal design that delivers 80 percent more cooling capacity and 75 percent more airflow to support up to 500 watts of power, which equates to 67 percent more power than the previous iMac.

The 27-inch screen on the iMac Pro will offer the same 5,120×2,880 resolution 5K Retina display, with the same 500 nits of brightness across its 14.7 million pixels, P3 colour gamut and support for over a billion colours, as the standard 27-inch iMac.
To match its new space gray enclosure, the iMac Pro will ship with matching space gray accessories that will be exclusive to the high-end machine and not othe
rwise available to Apple users. Those accessories include a wireless Magic Keyboard with a numeric keyboard and either a Magic Mouse 2 or a Magic Trackpad 2.

Processor

The iMac Pro will offer workstation class Xeon processors with up to 18-cores. The standard model will ship with an 8-core processor and there will be a 10-core processor on offer too.The more cores the better the performance.
Apple’s not revealing much about the processor speeds, other than that they will offer Turbo Boost of up to 4.5GHz.
Apple is also boasting that the new iMac Pro processor will have a cache of up to 42MB. Processor cache is similar to RAM, it’s memory for the processor and means that common CPU tasks can be accomplished quickly.
Any multi-core CPU will have at least three levels of cache: level one, two and three, or L1, L2 and L3. Macs with Kaby Lake processors have L1 cache of 64KB per core, 256KB of L2 cache, and 8MB of L3 cache.

Storage

While the new iMac Pro will offer a 1TB SSD as standard Apple says it will offer up to 4TB SSD and that this solid state storage will offer 3GB/s throughput (which is pretty standard on Macs).
In practical terms how much storage you need will depend on whether you are working with particularly large files. You could of course work off a RAID storage device but the fastest speeds will be achieved if your files are stored on the internal SSD.

RAM

iMac Pro, when it launches will be able to accommodate an impressive amount of memory — up to 128GB DDR4 ECC memory, according to Apple.
It will offer 32GB as standard, and a second configuration of 64GB.
The 27-inch standard iMac is configurable to 64GB DDR4 memory. The 27-inch iMac RAM is user accessible thanks to their RAM slots on the back. Apple has emphasised that it is aware of the needs of creative professionals to upgrade their Macs, and we hope that it will enable such upgrades in the new iMac Pro.

Ports

While the standard 27-inch iMac offers two Thunderbolt 3/USB Type-C ports, the iMac Pro offers four Thunderbolt 3/USB Type-C ports.
You can connect two additional 5K monitors for a whopping 44 million pixels.
Alternatively you could hook up two high-performance RAID arrays and enjoy 40Gb/s transfer speeds.
One thing it offers that the standard iMac doesn’t have is 10Gb Et
hernet. The standard Mac offers a Gigabit Ethernet socket. This means that sharing files between desktops, or working with high-performance network storage, will be up to10 times faster
The iMac Pro will also support Nbase-T industry standard 1Gb, 2.5Gb and 5Gb link speeds.

Graphics

One reason why there is a wait for the iMac Pro is Apple’s determination to use the upcoming AMD Radeon Pro Vega GPU.
AMD says that Vega will deliver its biggest graphics improvements in five years.
While Apple was the first company to announce that it will be using this new graphics card, it is entirely possible that other computers could arrive boasting the card before the new iMac Pro launches in December 2017.

Who is the iMac Pro For?

Apple has already revealed that the Mac Pro addresses the need of a very small niche, We expect that the iMac Pro will suit people who do 3D modelling, work on large 4K and HD projects, design simulations, render large files in real time, edit 4K video, create real-time audio effects, produce high frame rate content and create VR worlds from scratch.

The iMac Pro has gone on sale in several markets, including the US from December 14. India launch is expected shortly and prices for the iMac Pro in India start from Rs.415000/- .
